History
1995
“The Independent Dental Practice” was originally sited as an in-house orthodontic team at Netherton Dental Practice. But in 1995, John Derbyshire started working purely in orthodontics, so moved to Greenhead Road where he established The Independent Dental Practice as an independent orthodontic practice.
John was the only orthodontist at the time, and Joanne Hinchcliffe, now an orthodontic therapist, was our dental nurse.
Two orthodontists joined John and the team shortly afterwards.
2000 - 2004
Michael Pearson, Specialist Orthodontist, joined the practice in 2000 due to the growing demand for orthodontic treatment, after 22 years of working in dentistry and orthodontics in the Army. By now, the practice had three orthodontists and had incorporated a third surgery. We are proud that Mike remains with the practice today.
We also introduced a staff training programme, allowing dental nurses to take the national orthodontic and dental radiography certificate to improve our service.
2005 -2009
The Independent Dental Practice were proud to be the leading local provider of orthodontic care and were awarded the NHS contract for Kirklees and Calderdale in 2006.
Digital x-rays and photography were integrated into our system, and in 2009, we undertook a full refurbishment and extension of the surgery to accommodate an additional four orthodontic chairs.
We are delighted to have six open plan surgeries at The Independent Dental Practice to allow us to provide the highest standard of treatment to many patients.
2010 - 2014
Two of our highly qualified dental nurses, Joanne Hinchcliffe and Karen Townend, were among the first in the country to be trained as Orthodontic Therapists. Our nurses, Natalie Greenwood, Shemma Foley and Amanda Clune were also trained as radiographers, oral hygiene educators and qualified to take impressions.
We were joined by two excellent Specialist Orthodontists, Carolyn Vincent in 2010, and Fiona Jenkins in 2014, meaning our patients would benefit from an even wider breadth of experience and specialist skills. Both have sadly now left the practice. Both have since moved onto to pastures new.
2015
Three highly skilled orthodontists joined us between 2015 and 2019; Claire Rooney, Annie Kelly and Gavin Bell, securing The Independent Dental Practice as one of the leading practices in the country. We are delighted that Gavin and Claire remain with the practice today.
2020 - 2022
The Independent Dental Practice entered 2020 as became an entirely private provider of orthodontic services following government changes to dentistry and orthodontic services. Our practice offers high quality treatment through a range of affordable options for treatment packages including aesthetic various braces and aligners, inlcuding Invisalign. We were further joined by Specialist Orthodontists Zynab Jawad and Margaret Conway as well as Orthodontic Therapist Halima Khaliq. We also expanded our nursing and reception teams, and two of our nurses, Wendy Bell and Amanda Clune became Treatment Co-ordinators, who help our patients through their journey with us.
A complete refurbishment also took place in 2020 to further modernise the practice and ensure an excellent experience for every one of our patients.
2022 - date
After founding and owning the practice for nearly 30 years, John Derbyshire, a dedicated Specialist Dentist and Orthodontist retired and sold the pracrice to Portman Dental Care (now PortmanDentex). Mike Pearson has continued with the practice, along with four Specialist Orthodontists and three Orthodontic Therapists. They work hard together with our fantastic nurses, reception colleagues and Treatment Co-ordinators to provide an excellent orthodontic service for all our patients. In 2024 Jane Sykes joined our team as our Practice Manager, and together we look forward to celebrating our 30 year anniversary in March 2025! We continue to extend a warm welcome to every patient into our practice and creating many more fantastic smiles.
